Review:
Flame Versus Blaze is a free-to-play 3-on-3 mobile online battle arena (MOBA) game. You choose an agent, create a 4 card deck for extra abilities (1 companion + 3 items), bet some energy on the fight to win rewards, and then fight for your reactor’s supremacy. What puts the game on a time limit is the reactor fight. The whole point of the match is to power up your reactor and defeat the opposing reactor. Defeating enemy agents, collecting mana clusters, and defeating mobs on the map will empower your reactor. The key to victory lies in map control more than kill count.
Time: It takes about 1 minute for a match to queue. Sometimes you’ll face purely AI opponents. Frankly, they’re tougher than players I’ve faced. The match itself takes about 15 minutes to play a game. The game feels faster than competing MOBAs like Vainglory.
Pros and Cons: Good music from Square Enix, as usual. Fast gameplay and good auto-targeting mean lag spikes won’t destroy your game. The tutorial does teach new players the basics, but it completely neglects the card collection you’ll need for competitive play. I was careful and explored all the menu buttons. The result led to my discovery of how to equip cards and how that can benefit my agent. I can’t remember a specific point when the game explains what the statistics of your agents really mean. Still, Flame Versus Blaze is very kind to new players by providing warnings whenever you’re about to spend Midas on Scratch Tickets or Augments. Flame Versus Blaze also gives players two free agents. One you choose at the start, and the second once you complete several beginning achievements (which took less than an hour).
Overall Impression: I would recommend Flame Versus Blaze to players who enjoy a fast MOBA with minimal lag. If you don’t enjoy MOBA games, AI opponents, or online play, you’ll hate Flame Versus Blaze.
Tips:
- Control the map- Your AI allies get it. They will immediately go attack rockobolds and wulfkin to gain a tactical edge. It also nets you levels faster and more safely than trying to gank opponents in Flame Versus Blaze. One of my first human opponents had better cards than I did, a higher level in the match, yet he lost due to neglecting the map.
- Equipping cards requires attention to detail- Many of the best cards have a level limit. This means the card won’t unlock for your agent in a match until you reach the specified level. I enjoy a balance of early, middle, and late game cards. An example would be an ordinary no level required weapon, a level 4 or 5 card, and finally, a level 7 card which drastically improves your best attack stat (power or soul).
- When in doubt, follow the AI – If you’re still getting used to the game, just team up! It’ll give you more protection and help you control mana clusters faster.
