Hello, dear reader, I hope you’re having a good day. This article on Chroma Squad is a full review. There’s a video review uploaded on the Lunar Nebula LLC Gaming YouTube channel if you’d rather watch a condensed review on Behold Studio’s Chroma Squad. If you want to see more of the game, you can check out my finished Let’s Play on the channel. SOME SPOILERS AHEAD. I’m not being paid to write this blog, and it contains information based on my opinions from playing Chroma Squad on iOS. Chroma Squad is rated 9+ on the App Store for Infrequent/Mild Cartoon or Fantasy Violence. It’s mostly Saturday morning cartoon levels of violence and name calling. There is implied brainwashing and torture by the main bad guy, Lord Gaga, but it’s not really explicitly laid out for the player.
Review:
Chroma Squad is a $4.99 SRPG or TRPG (strategy or tactical role-playing game) providing around 30 hours of gameplay for one playthrough. You select five actors to don the costumes of five super sentai heroes. Each actor has different perks and specific role abilities. For example, Danai in my Let’s Play is the Lead actor. She is based on the Micha actress you can hire at the start of the game. Micha has a $30 salary, +15% Counter attack chance, and +20% Health. If you’re playing normal or casual, the stats aren’t terribly important. I like having good stats on normal mode, but it won’t break your back to choose characters who don’t maximize their niche. Pick who you want to pick. You could make Micha your Assault teammate instead of Lead, and she’d still do a decent job, but you’d miss out on other actors’ higher damage which perfectly compliments the Assault class. The class abilities will unlock as you progress through season after season. Basically, Chroma Squad lets you customize your fantasy Power Rangers team, create their team quotes, and name the important things. Like the giant robot! I named mine Nebulord. Gameplay requires you to use your actors’ various abilities and teamwork in order to meet the Director’s Instructions and gain an audience. More audience equals more fans which become more money and power. You’ll need to manage your resources well in order to get better gear and choose when to craft better parts for your robot. Especially with upkeep costs! Don’t worry too much though. As long as you keep filming and surviving you should be able to hold debt off. Based on how you react to messages and in-game choices, like paying the bills or defeating Lord Gaga before Tammy, you’ll unlock different events and storylines to play through. The game won’t notify you what storyline you’re in so the story flows uninterrupted.
Pros: Good music, re-playable storylines, and nostalgic pixel art all lead to a light-hearted presentation suitable for all ages. The Teamwork mechanic means every character can be useful even if their role abilities are currently unnecessary.
Cons: There’s no way to move the map’s camera angle if you want to verify character movement towards large enemies. Hardcore SRPG fans may not enjoy Chroma Squad due to the simplified strategic layer and character progression. There are some bugs with the studio upgrades menu, but you can finesse your way around it.
Overall Impression: I would recommend Chroma Squad to players who enjoy a fun story, streamlined turn-based strategies, and pixel art. Anyone looking for a decent squad-based strategy game should find a powerful experience in Chroma Squad. I personally enjoyed the game. My favorite boss is a parody of Barney. I don’t want to spoil it for you, just know it exists! If you like tons of challenging gameplay mechanics and finding ways to make your characters overpowered, then Chroma Squad isn’t for you.

Extra Tips:
- I was wrong in GTT 24- Tip 6 said weapons won’t activate teamwork attacks. It won’t activate teamwork attacks unless your teammates also have weapons ready to use! You can’t activate normal punches and kicks with a sword. You can also use ranged weapons to activate teamwork weapon attacks! This makes ranged weapons much better than simple skill regen boosters.
- The mecha’s finishing move skills also ramp up in attack power with an increased combo- Most Mecha skills let you know the combo counter will affect healing with a multiplier. The finishing skills don’t quite receive the same love, but they do get boosted damage against kaiju. An example is the sword's damage ranging from its minimum 14,000 damage to dealing around 20,000 with a 3 combo by the final season.
