Light Review: Storm Wars CCG requires strategy, perseverance, and luck. It's like an idle card game. Once you click start battle, the game plays itself. You need to select your cards wisely. There is no energy system, and the game kindly lets you retry battles without penalty, except in the Coliseum. The Coliseum is the PVP arena against static snapshots of other players' decks. You have 30 chances to defeat 20 other players' decks. Winning against every opponent will net you an extra five gems, the paid currency. There are a variety of other ways to earn gems and cards which makes the game fair for free-to-play gamers. Storm Wars CCG starts with a small tutorial in its campaign and then leaves you to figure out how equipment, dungeons, and the world work. There are plenty of online resources to help out. I left the FAQ link below my tips. The campaign tells a story in short bursts before and after levels. There are always five levels per mission. Eventually you will unlock multiple choices for future missions, the Coliseum, and an endless dungeon. At the top right corner of the game you will see a variety of options for getting new cards.
Life lesson: Perseverance is rewarded. I highly recommend spending time in the endless dungeon whenever you hit a roadblock.
- When starting make a balanced deck- The game isn’t too hard in the beginning. The trouble starts once you meet the owlbears and dire rabbits. Still, the game remains overall fair. I was able to overcome the high elves through retrying the battle until I finally won. The key is to make a deck able to win with a proper chain of events. You want a good combination of low cost and high cost cards so your low-cost cards can shield your hero until you finally get a cadre of cards to enter the field at the same time. This provides an overwhelming force which will immediately attack once summoned. If you're really having trouble with a certain level, build a deck which counters it. Or grind in the endless dungeon until you get better cards and equipment.
- The Endless Dungeon is wonderful- You will gain equivalent experience for your hero and earn more treasure chests which can unlock equipment. Equipment doesn't come very early on in the campaign and it can provide a significant boost to your power. The other armies you face will be led by heroes approximately four levels lower or higher than your own. Some of these decks will counter yours entirely and you will not win. Other armies, you will be able to retry battles against the same opponent until victory is in your grasp! Just click the retry battle option after your defeat. This can help you bypass difficult campaign missions as well.
- Hero tips- Heroes are able to hold two pieces of equipment, provide a morale boost of +1 health to their faction, and will have different Army sizes and abilities. You will unlock heroes just by playing the game. The game rightly recommends Laertes as your first hero. He is able to generate a large army, control the opponent’s field, and will provide plus one health to the Atlantean faction when you start. The Atlanteans are a good faction to start with because many of their units have the shield ability which prevents physical damage. If you do want to switch from Laertes, keep in mind new heroes will be at a lower level and all heroes obtain their ultimate skills at level 15. Note, the game is easier when you gain good equipment. Farm the endless dungeon for items!
- Card Suggestions- Like most other card games, the first thing to do is choose cards based on stats for the summon cost. Storm Wars CCG is well balanced, yet some abilities do break this trend of choosing cards for their stats. An example would be the high elf scouts' ability to stealth and prevent all damage for one attack. You can basically block an infinite amount of damage once with stealth. There are cards which can remove stealth or multi-attack to counter this ability. However, at the start of the campaign, those cards shouldn't be a bother.
- Several quality-of-life tips- If you ever have trouble finding your treasure chests or armies, return to the main menu. Everything you need can be selected from the main menu just by clicking the back arrow at the bottom left of the screen. I spent several minutes looking for the treasure tab within the campaign. I now know it only shows up if you have a treasure chest you can unlock or a new item. The game will warn you when you have a full collection of treasure chests. Wood and steel treasure chests unlock immediately and will not count against your inventory. 50 gems are all you need to open platinum packs with guaranteed epics. I do not recommend fighting in the Coliseum until your hero has reached their 15th level. Most players are higher-level, have larger armies, and will destroy you before you can take a swing. To get more stars in the campaign, don't change the difficulty. The game automatically selects the next highest difficulty after you beat missions. Changing the difficulty just makes the game think you're trying to make it easier so you can gain XP from past conquests.
