1. Firing technique can help- To make the most of your gun, have one finger hovering over auto-battle. This way you can track dangerous foes with red exclamation marks with the camera while the machine gun isn’t wasting time idling. Double tapping the screen will pull you out of auto-battle and zoom in on your target. Don’t forget you can pause and add health to your tortoise when you’re in a pinch!
2. When starting, don’t worry about dying- Dying is actually part of the game. You will reach a point where your tortoise isn’t tough enough. This is where the next heroic tortoise of your family line steps up to the plate to defend the poor creatures of the forest…with mortars and machine guns. Like a true hero! Plus you’ll earn perks which carry over benefits from your dead tortoise to your new one. These perks include extra damage, higher starting money, and more money earned. If you really don’t want to die, you can watch an ad every six hours to gain perks.
3. It’s a balancing act between getting money and getting power- you must upgrade your mining towers. MUST. You must also buy units. Figuring out the timing in the early game is difficult. It’s been a long time, yet I believe the main trick is to buy a support unit if you’re starting to take damage beyond 10% of your health.
4. Focus on building and buying extra units so you can auto-battle more effectively- having more units means more bullets aimed at your foes. Your units aren’t always accurate and squads often waste shots on one target at a time. Buying multiple unit types decreases this waste and variability in shots. Not to mention it’s really fun to watch the chaos on-screen.
5. Upgrading your allies is a tactical move- with the strategy outlined above, you’ll want to make sure your allies are up to the challenge. Weapon upgrades deal increased damage, but if it’s a choice between more allies and more firepower I’d choose allies. This gives you more shields for your tortoise, provides greater battlefield accuracy (not shot accuracy), and allows for dead allies to respawn back to the field before you’re dead. The Mouse Assault Squad acts as moving targets, but the Mouse Gunner Squad will be the best initial damage dealing squad as you progress in the game. Also, increase the range of your Gun Towers or they won’t protect you as well and more Heavy Weapons will successfully attack your tortoise.
6. Don’t waste money on primary weapons- the mortar rack and gun carriages will independently fire from your tortoise. Pretty much everything you get can outdo your primary weapon. In the beginning, the game requires you to upgrade your machine gun since you start with so little. The sniper will be immediately better. As you go down the family tree, you’ll have greater options such as the mortar rack providing independent area of effect damage.
7. The store screen is not just for in-app payments- the shopping cart icon at the top right actually leads you to the perk store. Here you can spend your shields to unlock heroes and perks. You don’t have to buy this currency. You can receive it from doing special boss challenges and from playing the game. I’d save up for unlocking all heroes, being able to use multiple heroes in battle, and get double money. Your first choice for a hero should be the Pack Rat because he automatically collects money for you and you can just idle if you want.
8. Unlock Heroes for special abilities and more- heroes are special units which will glow golden when their special ability is active. Tap them to release their power. This function is available in auto-battle. Pack Rat due to the ability to generate extra money with its ability. It will also collect money on the screen for you to rest your hands. The Rabbit Chief Medic can make your tortoise invincible so you can progress further than normally possible as long as you’re willing to pay attention.
9. Just because it’s an idle game, don’t be careless- my tortoise can still die around level 50 if I’m not paying attention to the upgrades and enemies on screen. Your tortoise won’t last forever. Don’t forget if you do hit a rough spot, you can pause the game and collect money to purchase more health in an attempt to survive a difficult wave.
