Hello, dear reader. I hope you've heard of Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes. I'm not being paid to write about this or sponsored in any way. I haven't spent any money on the game, I've been playing it for approximately a year or more, and I'm at the max level of 85. The game has changed multiple times since I started playing it and I don't know if all my advice for beginners will carry through to your current experience. That said, I can help you make good choices for unlocking characters early on and help you manage your team. I haven't spent a dime on the game and I still enjoy it.
Dear reader, please note these are simply my opinions on how to begin the game. I wish I knew the Royal Guard was so good at the beginning of the game. Next time, I'll write down my Galactic War strategy so you can start unlocking some wonderful characters!
- Log in everyday. This is a common piece of advice for any free to play game. In this game you get character shards, which rotate monthly, to help you unlock characters and other prizes. Complete the challenges and compete in the arena every day when you're starting.
- Never use all your energy in the beginning. Only do the daily activities each day and save your energy (approximately 35 minutes of your time per day). Eventually, you'll hit a road block where Stormtroopers will annihilate your team by throwing grenades. When you get to this point, all of the saved overflow energy you have will let you get the gear your team needs. Fast. Then you can proceed through the game.
- Be patient, padawan. If you don't want to spend money on Galaxy of Heroes you'll need to exercise self control and not waste your credits and energy. Try to always save some credits and training droids just in case you unlock your new best character and need to level them.
- Don't waste energy on mods until you have a solid team. The mod challenges give you the best mods, but you get random ones. I suggest begin getting random health mods and then move towards specific ones. It's eventually better to use your energy on the Mod battles so you can get the big perks more cheaply. Frankly, I'm still not sure what the better energy investment is for Mods.
- Solid teams are synergistic, or simply powerful. Some characters are just better. Rey is a beast who doesn't really need synergy to work well in most teams. Jedi, on the other hand, can become greater as a team than as individuals. Many of their leader abilities will give greater bonuses to jedi. If you ever want to research good teams you can go to https://swgoh.gg/ for good information.
- Early characters to recruit early on, in my opinion, include: Dark Side: Royal Guard, Old Daka, Greedo, Captain Phasma, and Talia. Light Side: Luminara Unduli, Biggs Darklighter, Qui-Gon Jinn, Jedi Consular and Stormtrooper Han. I've chosen these characters for several reasons. This way you'll have 2 healers, 1 tank, good leaders and at least one decent damage dealer.
- Focusing on Greedo and Han early on means you'll have less work to do when you need Bounty Hunters to do special events geared towards credits and training droids. You can swap Han out of this list and focus on Chewbacca, but Chewie isn't as good in the late game. Both work towards the Bounty Hunter events. These events didn't exist when I started. Now they are invaluable to leveling characters.
- I use Captain Phasma at level 85 as my current squad arena and Dark Side story leader. She's a decent investment. I use Luminara less today than I did in the beginning. She's still a great healer and I always use her in Galactic War battles. The Royal Guard is my favorite tank. He can stun when you level his force pike ability, and he automatically protects your team when they get hurt. It doesn't take his turn. It's amazing. He doesn't start out amazingly, but he grows into his role.
- Some characters listed here require Arena Tokens, War Tokens, or Cantina Credits. You won't see all of them in the Campaign levels. This means you can focus on unlocking multiple characters at the same time.
