Hello, dear reader, I hope you’re having a good day. I’ve played Soda Dungeon by Armor Games Studio on iPad for almost a year now. I haven’t technically completed the game. Soda Dungeon was updated after I completed its first iteration. It takes a long time and it is designed to. It is a free to play idle game with advertising. The advertising can be turned off through normal play (it will be on if you play on autopilot). You can think of it as a reward for tenacity. An idle game can continue without you actively playing it. You can ‘beat’ this game for free. You can buy perks to help the game go more quickly and to get more powerful heroes. Here’s a summary of a few of my tips and tricks on the game.I’m not being paid to write this blog, and it contains the information I remember from playing the game and recently reviewing it. I think the game’s age rating is appropriate (12+ on the App Store). It contains some cartoon blood and violence, and occasional curse words.

- When starting the game, don’t spend all your gold. You may be tempted to get upgrades at the bar, but it’s less important than getting better equipment and minimizing your risk when entering the dungeon. Also, you can run out of gold and be unable to hire anyone in the early game. Thankfully, Soda Junkies work for free, yet you’ll save yourself some headaches and time focusing on long-term strategy for conquering the dungeon.
- Spend all your gold before hopping dimensions. Gold does not carry over between dimensions. When you hit level 100 you get a choice to hop to a new dimension. You have to buy the VIP perk ‘Inherit’ from the tavern to inherit even a small amount of gold in the new dimension. VIP perks and the stables are a few options that will remain constant as you hop to new dimensions. The stables let you buy pets and upgrade them. I recommend the Physical Damage % pet or the increased Gold amount pet. Most pets give you a flat bonus which will be nearly useless in the late game. You always need gold so that pet is an obvious choice. Pets level up as you go through battles with them to a maximum level of 6.
- The best team for the daily challenge arena consists of 3 Darkmages. Darkmages’ Noxin ability will instantly take down any arena team. There are nine difficulty levels in the arena and the rewards start as gold, then become essence, and finally a single relic token. Gold is more immediately useful until you pass through several dimensions. Once you’ve unlocked several sodas, essences start becoming a big deal. The Relic token is a free level up on any soda regardless of its essence cost. You want to save up tokens for your most important sodas.
- My top 5 sodas are: increased critical chance, increased health, increased gold, increased essence drop, and increased evasion. If you want to run through the dungeons quickly, increasing your critical chance is the fastest way to maximize your damage. Increasing your health is absolutely vital to surviving at higher levels of the dungeon. These two sodas are hard to choose between. Afterward your needs will trend towards increasing your pool of resources and upgrades. Increasing every character’s evasion is simply wonderful. When you’re happy with these five sodas, I recommend upgrading the Healer class soda. I have consistently used Healers throughout the tower to keep my party alive, and giving them more survivability combined with greater magic helps them do so.
- My favorite team to defeat bosses with is a Healer or two, a Merchant, a Thief, and a Knight. This team is excellent because of the survivability combined with the sheer amount of damage. You can travel through floors and still deal excellent damage. I eventually replaced the Merchant to give my team greater survivability, but he has a chance to deal 50% of his target’s health in one hit. This works on plenty of bosses. For a price of course. The Merchant takes a small amount of your actual gold every time he flips his coin.
- My favorite team of adventurers in the late game consists of two Healers, a Darkmage, a Thief, and a Knight. This team has great survivability and profitability. Eventually, you can get a chance to instantly kill enemies with the Reaper Legendary weapon. Equip your Healers with this so they can sometimes be effective at combat, keep themselves alive, and keep your damage dealers alive. Darkmages can decrease every enemies’ chance to hit. They deal decent damage, too. The Thief is your primary damage dealer, and she should be positioned at the back of your party before the Knight. She also has the wonderful ability to open all treasure chests on screen. This triples the value of defeating bosses. It’s an essential ability if you’re looking for items. The Knight has several useful properties: he can deal decent damage, protect your other units when they are low on health, and he allows your party to travel safely through any door. This is no small gift. Traveling through doors can result in complete healing (including refilling your magic), more treasure, or the ability to warp several floors ahead. Without the Knight, expect traps. Lots of traps.
- Positioning is key to get the most out of your team. The autopilot follows a script. It’s not the smartest thing ever. It won’t get you through some boss battles. I like to put a Healer or two at the top of the team. They can heal before anyone else acts, and heal each other if necessary. The Darkmage or Merchant is my third party member to either nuke or debuff/destroy weak enemies. The Thief is my fourth to provide access to backstab bonuses. The Knight is last to allow the Thief to thin the monsters’ ranks, thus preventing wasted area of effect damage from the Knight’s Smite skill, and to get backstab bonus damage.
- A weapon’s star value doesn’t always make it good. Weapons will have better versions of themselves on higher levels. More stars equal better stats. Generally, weapons found on higher tiers are simply better than a 5-star weapon found on a lower level. In the early game, damage and health are vital to your success.
- The banker will never hold more than 1 Million gold. This ensures you log in every day to check on the bank. It won’t help you out much unless you decide to accumulate wealth before tackling a new dimension you’ve just entered.
